Gianluca will be curating Diplorama at the Faculty of Design and Art for the third time. And this year the Diplorama campaign deals with “Fragile structures”, a poetic oxymoron between delicacy and solidity.
We live in times of profound change, continuously uncovering the vulnerability and fragility of the diverse systems we are a part of, highlighting the urgent need to respond and instigate change.
The students of the Faculty of Design and Art – unibz are keenly aware of these ubiquitous signs, and this new Diplorama edition showcases a portion of their unique and contemporary perspectives and visions on these issues.

Congratulations to all the students featured in the catalogue: your work is essential and will undoubtedly have a significant impact on tomorrow’s design. S.O.S. is no longer a cry for help; this time it represents the promise of your commitment to solving the world’s problems.

Thanks a lot to Alice Rawsthorn for contributing to the publication with her essay: it has been an honour to feature your words in this book.

Looking at unibz students’ projects, it’s easy to understand their commitment to fighting the urgent issues which threaten our planet every day. That’s why we chose “SOS” as a new theme for Diplorama! 2023: the universal sequence of letters describing an emergency, twisting its alarming signal into a positive one and, at the same time, proposing an alternative message to the acronym… SOS: Sorting Out Solutions. This year, I have been lucky enough to work with Giovanni Stillittano – who was a brilliant alumnus of the faculty – and is now a talented graphic designer.  Finally, I am happy to invite you to the opening this Friday 17th of March, at 6 pm, unibz campus, Piazza Università 1, Bolzano.

Guardando ai progetti degli studenti unibz, è facile capire il loro impegno nel combattere le questioni urgenti che minacciano il nostro pianeta ogni giorno. Ecco perché quest’anno abbiamo scelto “SOS” come nuovo tema per Diplorama! 2023: la sequenza universale di lettere che descrive un’emergenza, trasformando il suo segnale di allarme in un segnale positivo e, allo stesso tempo, proponendo un messaggio alternativo all’acronimo… SOS: Sorting Out Solutions. Quest’anno ho avuto la fortuna di lavorare con Giovanni Stillittano, brillante ex allievo della Facoltà e oggi talentuoso graphic designer.  Infine, sono felice di invitarvi all’inaugurazione di venerdì 17 Marzo, alle ore 18.00, presso il campus unibz, Piazza Università 1, Bolzano.

”Parola, immagine e cultura editoriale“ is a brand new publication that celebrates the twentieth anniversary of APICE presenting possible reading analysis of the archival materials that make up the Centre’s heritage.

In the book, edited by Viviana Pozzoli and Paolo Rusconi, alongside Gianluca’s contribution you will find texts by Giorgio Bacci, Paolo Bossi, Yves Chevrefils Desbiolles, Barbara Galli, Davide Lacagnina, Antonello Negri, Viviana Pozzoli and Paola Valenti.

With the help of Matteo Campostrini, a brilliant designer and alumnus of the Faculty of Design and Art – unibz, we designed this year’s Diplorama identity with graphics made of coloured surfaces forming a solidus or an angle, which may also be seen as a prospect view of two walls, in short, a space – be it a corridor, a room or the university terrace – which we are invited to enter.

The catalogue follows the same idea, reflecting on the physical object made of three dimensions – cover, back cover, #book spine and side – which all are distinctive features of printed matter. These are shuffled and emphasised with a combination of colours in order to make the catalogue an actual space of debate and promotion. Looking at all projects collected in this year’s Diplorama catalogue is proof that art and design are in the right direction to tackle urgent matters and possibly avoid some of the next ones. Our students are now focusing on the circular economy, alternative materials and local natural resources, rethinking mobility, or provoking anti-consumerism and innovative sustainable ecosystems. They call for reflecting on the social dynamics of media and digitisation as much as on inclusiveness. Diplorama! is a key step in the life of each student, it is a celebration as well as a showcase especially made for them, a gate towards known spaces and an invitation to share new ones, a cry of joy, well, it’s… Diplorama!

Con l’aiuto di Matteo Campostrini, brillante grafico ed ex studente della Facoltà di Design e Arti – unibz, abbiamo progettato l’identità del Diplorama di quest’anno con una grafica fatta di superfici colorate che formano un solido o un angolo, che può anche essere visto come una vista prospettica di due pareti, insomma uno spazio – sia esso un corridoio, una stanza o la terrazza dell’università – in cui siamo invitati a (ri)entrare.

Il catalogo segue la stessa idea, riflettendo sull’oggetto-libro fisico fatto di tre dimensioni – copertina, quarta di copertina, dorso del libro e lato – che sono tutte caratteristiche distintive degli stampati. Queste sono mescolate ed enfatizzate con una combinazione di colori per rendere il catalogo un vero e proprio spazio di dibattito e promozione. Guardare tutti i progetti raccolti nel catalogo Diplorama di quest’anno è la prova che l’arte e il design sono nella giusta direzione per affrontare le questioni urgenti e possibilmente evitare alcune delle prossime. I nostri studenti si concentrano ora sull’economia circolare, sui materiali alternativi e sulle risorse naturali locali, ripensando la mobilità o provocando l’anticonsumismo e gli ecosistemi sostenibili innovativi. Chiedono di riflettere sulle dinamiche sociali dei media e della digitalizzazione e sull’inclusività. Diplorama! è una tappa fondamentale nella vita di ogni studente, è una celebrazione ma anche una vetrina fatta appositamente per loro, una porta verso spazi conosciuti e un invito a condividerne di nuovi, un grido di gioia, beh, è… Diplorama!
